Hello from Punta Arenas, Chile

We made it to Punta Arenas, Chile. For those of you tracking us, that's S 58.09.885' W 70.54.529'. We're buying food (quite a challenge for 5 women with limited knowledge of the Spanish language) and packing our gear. We hope to be on a flight to Patriot Hills, Antarctica no later than the 10th.

Punta Arenas is a nice Chilean port city with plenty of charm, beauty and history. In 1520, Magellan was the first European to visit this area. Founded in 1848, Punta Arenas was originally a military garrison and penal settlement. There are two substantial colonies of Magelllanic penguins nearby. This unique penguin is also known as the "donkey penguin" for its characteristic braying sound. If our flight to Antarctica is delayed, we plan to take a quick trip out to visit the penguins.

Take care,

Team Polar Opposites
(we've settled on this name as it best represents our goal....to be among a handful of women to have trekked to both poles!)

-20, oh my.. that is cold! Sounds like a mighty expensive cargo plane you girls have hijacked!!! Here is a recipe for South Pole Wine I have been dying to try:
chop some ice off a glacier with your pick, place it in your mess pan. Add 2T Instant Coffee, 2 1/2 cups sugar, and 1tsp Vanilla. Boil to reduce and remove from fire. Transfer to H20 bottle. Let it ferment for a couple of days, sip, and enjoy! TRAVEL SAFE!!
