Gale force winds at Patriot Hills
Well, the day started out with our hopes high to fly south to Patriot Hills, but winds and temperatures are keeping us here in Punta Arenas. The winds are gusting to 80+ mph and the temperatures are WARMER at Patriot Hills!! You might think that´s a good thing....but the ice runway must be deeply frozen in order for the plane to land safely. Warmer temperatures make the runway slippery.
So, we´ve been walking around Punta Arenas to keep fit while on standby (they´ll give us about 2 hours notice to get to the plane with all our layers of cold weather gear on). Looking out from atop the hills of Punta Arenas, you can see Tierra del Fuego and only 150 miles south is Cape Horn where ships pass around the southern tip of South America.
We´re in Punta Arenas for at least one more night. Even if the weather clears immediately, the plane cannot take off too late as it must refuel on its way to Patriot Hills. This fuel depot is not staffed 24 hours. So, we´re off to dinner at one of the fine dining establishments in this charming port at the end (almost) of the world.
Keep us in your thoughts...

Flight delays! Hummm! That rings a bell, hein Josée! Looks like Mother Nature does not discriminate between the northern or southern polar regions. Hang in there! Hope you all have some musk ox fur stuffed in your mittens to keep you warm.
