Stubborn storms

The storm continues in Patriot Hills, keeping us grounded here in Punta Arenas. The flight crew calls us every two hours with an update of the weather conditions in Antarctica. We are looking for a window of ¨good¨ weather....which means, wind speeds of less than 20mph. On our last call, winds were still gusting at 32+mph. So, we wait...

We´re getting caught up on our reading, crosswords, and any other diversion to pass the time. Many interesting people here. A few climbers, one with aspirations to climb Everest, and one trying to be the first to summit all seven of the highest peaks on each continent in record time. We met a British woman who has just set the record for the fastest solo unsupported ski to the South Pole (approx. 37 days). She lost about 42 pounds in the process....something we´re planning to avoid.

All in all, we are well and cheerful. Keep us in your thoughts and hope for a clearing in the weather.

Best,

Team Polar Opposites

Naomi,

Must be very frustrating not to be able to get started on your trip. I check in every day - hoping for good news tomorrow. Anna didn't get offered a place a Cambridge but she's not too unhappy about it. Anyway, best of British to you all - sounds as though all is well on the home front!!
Lots of Love and best wishes

During the winter of 1944/45 I was stationed at RAF Northolt just outside London processing passengers
flying to and from the continent - mainly Brussels and Paris.

We had three days when no aircraft could get off the ground because of the bad weather. When it was clear in London it was bad on the continent and vice versa.

This gave rise to some wag coining the phrase "If you've time to spare - travel by air!"

I leave you with that thought!

Hi Naomi,
I spoke to John last night who told me you were still held up by the weather and I am presuming frustrated.
Peter and I send you our love and wishes for a calming of the winds.
